It didn't help that, while I didn't remember the details, I remembered the twist which slightly spoiled the suspense. He wanted her to take a job as understudy to one of his singers in a newly discovered opera by Beethoven. With nothing to lose, Anne decides to take up the offer, and finds herself rapidly involved in intrigue, scandal, and extreme danger. Even so, when she was offered the leading role in the newly discovered Beethoven opera Regulus to be debuted in the tiny European principality of Lissenberg, Anne knew it was the chance of a lifetime. Strange accidents had already caused chaos. The ending was confusing, almost spoiling the story line, as the other characters struggle to capture the moment.

As she is an orphan with nothing and no-one in England that she has ties to, she decides to go. All pages are intact, and the cover is intact. Jane Hodge was 3 years old when her family moved to Great Britain, settling in where her younger sister, , who would become a novelist and a children's writer, was born. Then murder brought a new terror. She enjoys the borderland between mystery and novel, is pleased to be classed as a feminist writer, and is glad that there is neither a glass ceiling nor a retiring age in the writers' world.

Last act (Book, 1979) [pfactory.in]

It's an old book copyright 1979 but it stands up to the test of time really, really well and is still such a lovely romance. Not my favourite novel by this author, and somehow I didn't find myself deeply involved with any of the characters although they were mostly believable enough. Her doctor informs her that she has - at most - six months to live. Then murder brought a new terror. Anne, a rising opera star who lost her voice when her husband died is told by her doctor that she is dying, with only a few months left to live. But it certainly kept me interested for a couple of days and I enjoyed reading it. Anne, an opera singer who gave up her career to marry, has just been informed by her doctor that she has 6 months or less to live.

Strange things happen to Anne as she travels to Lissenberg by plane and train via Switzerland, but she eventually arrives to start rehearsals and finds the situation unusually tense and mysterious. I am planning on reading the others in the series also as e-books , which are set further back in time. Even so, when she was offered the leading role in the newly discovered Beethoven opera Regulus to be debuted in the tiny European principality of Lissenberg, Anne knew it was the chance of a lifetime. Certainly not Michael, the charming, handsome, Oxford-educated man to whom Anne was so attracted - the man who kneew too many things, and who somehow managed to be very close to Anne when she faced her greatest peril. It was exactly what I needed.

I have a raging head cold and I really needed a nice comfort read. In Last Act, first published in 1979, Jane Aiken Hodge combines all the elements of a thrilling romance — her heroine is enchanting, the setting glittering, and the men are handsome but dangerous. But it certainly kept me interested for a couple of days and I enjoyed reading it. Anne, given only a short time left to live, is no wishy-washy heroine, and Hodge gives us some insight into rehearsing for an opera production. Even so, when she was offered the leading role in the newly discovered Beethoven opera Regulus to be debuted in the tiny European principality of Lissenberg, Anne knew it was the chance of a lifetime. Will the opera finally go ahead and be the success that Lissenberg needs it to be, to stave off bankruptcy or absorption as part of another country? This was exactly it - so much so that I've added a new Goodreads shelf for comfort reads and this is its first entry. That's what the doctors told her.

Just where that pain is you will never find out by reading this book. Her writing style is crisp, her suspense is just scary enough to keep me reading but not unpleasant enough to stop me sleeping at night! She receives a letter from an old friend begging her to join him in Lissenberg to sing in a newly discovered opera by Beethoven, to be performed in their new, grand opera house at the opening of an important international peace conference. A lucky girl who faced with certain death was chosen to travel to Switzerland in a Palace, no less, to sing it. Suddenly she recovers her voice. When tragically widowed opera singer, Anne Paget, is told by a doctor that she has only a few months to live she is devastated. But someone wanted the opera to fail.

She received a master's degree from Radcliffe College, Harvard University. Instead of withering quietly into her fate she decides to take a risk and a final challenge, accepting a surprise offer to perform in an opera to be staged in a hidden principality in the Alps, to celebrate an international peace conference. The binding may be slightly damaged but integrity is still intact. The same day, she receives an invitation to be understudy in a newly-discovered opera in the small European town of Lissenburg. About Last Act When tragically widowed opera singer, Anne Paget, is told by a doctor that she has only a few months to live she is devastated. Who was behind all this? It's true that the production of a previously undiscovered opera by Beethoven occupies much of the first half of the book.

With nothing to lose, Anne decides to take up the offer, and finds herself rapidly involved in intrigue, scandal, and extreme danger. Pages can include considerable notes-in pen or highlighter-but the notes cannot obscure the text. Certainly not Michael, the charming, handsome, Oxford-educated man to whom Anne was so attracted - the man who knew too many things, and who somehow managed to be very close to Anne when she faced her greatest peril. Even so, when she was offered the leading role in the newly discovered Beethoven opera Regulus to be debuted in the tiny European principality of Lissenberg, Anne knew it was the chance of a lifetime. A book with obvious wear.

More recently she has written novels for Severn House Publishers. But someone wanted the opera to fail. Strange accidents had already caused chaos. Whatever it is that she has shows up on x-rays, but again you have no idea what portion of her anatomy was x-rayed.
