Book Review: The Shelly Beach Writers’ Group by June Loves

Go ahead and read it you won't regret it. Her combined career as journalist, teacher, librarian, educational consultant, and bookshop-seller enables her to comfort and keep young and old writers on track in her lively workshops. She's living proof that you can make changes to your life's direction at any time and this is the basis for the novel. Gina's a gas, if not a very complicated or well-developed one. It is apparent the book is some fantasy life the author dreamed up, perhaps to get a little break from reality. She's living proof that you can make changes to your life's direction at any time and this is the basis for the novel. The premise is good that's why we buy books half the time, right? By all means, write such books as a hobby, as therapy, as an escape.

I am being generous with 2 stars. She so relates to fiction writers who escape into the comfort of imaginary worlds — as the real world collapses around them. Gina goes to live in Shelley Beach after her hubby announces he wants a divorce of course! Subjects Copyright information Text copyright © June Loves 2011 ; Illustrations copyright © Kat Chadwick 2010. But it is also whip-smart, very funny, and unpredictable — altogether a blend of elements that kept me up late, reading just one more chapter. Fifty-something Gina, dumped by her husband, settles in Shelly Beach to lick her wounds and hide from the rat race. Enrolled into the life of Adrian, the Shelly Beach groover whose hotted off to London to look after his grandchildren while his daughter undergoes chemotherapy, Gina has agreed to dog-sit Hugo, or Dog as she insists on calling him, and to basically do everything Adrian was going to do in this six-month period.

But if you can put all those annoying gaps aside and let yourself drift, this is an easy way to while away some time, kind of like watching a B-television movie. I did finish it, which was an effort, and rather a waste of time. Of course, the complication may have already occurred and I'm actually deep into Act 2, but if so there was no way to tell. Loved the 50 something Ginas frank discription of her husband King Rat Kenneth her house sitting dog minding experiences and all the her up and downs with the Shely Beach locals and bossy child the book lhad me knoding with understanding and laughing so easy to relate to June Loves great little houmours chapters. But Gina hasn't counted on the locals, and soon finds herself reluctantly convening the writers' group, babysitting, baking, seal-watching, bicycling.

Gina goes to live in Shelley Beach after her hubby announces he wants a divorce of course! One of my fav books ever. First of all, the story is narrated in a diary-entry and email format. A sweet, funny and wise story. A lovely light read that left me hoping for more novels from this wonderful lady. Gina, a barely 50-something corporate high-flier, is counting her losses when a chance meeting throws a sea change her way. This is a light, easy and entertaining read about a middle aged woman who regained her confidence and renewed her faith in life.

This includes such herculean tasks such as finishing his café-cum-bookstore renovation oh, and opening it - nothing major! Secondly, it involves animals no, she doesn't fall in love with an animal. But Gina hasn't counted on the locals, and soon finds herself reluctantly convening the writers' group, babysitting, baking, seal-watching, bicycling. I'm not one of those huge animal-lovers, but the way in which she incorporates the characters of these animals into the narrative is impressive. You have to read the book to find out! She now lives near the beach in Victoria with her husband. The Shelly Beach Writers' Group is an irresistible, whimsical story of reinvention. But Gina hasn't counted on the locals, and soon finds herself reluctantly convening the writers' group, babysitting, baking, seal-watching, bicycling. Seems to have been written as an exercise in writing a novel.

I really enjoyed reading the struggles of Gina, who finds herself broke and house-sitting, with a long list of tasks left to her by the house's owner. I'm at the point where the story is stumbling to a halt, probably around about the end of act 1. But supposedly humourous novels don't always hold my attention. The characters are only sketched, rather than developed fully, but I think this only adds to the light-heartedness. I couldn't tell her 3 city friends apart for most of the novel, and the seaside characters all blurred together too.

Adrian and Gina correspond via email and phone calls which are all quite funny with Gina's internal thoughts added. A favourite in Gina's self-talk, that lovely Australian statement covers everything from the fabulous the younger hot Asian chef Lee making a move on her to the ridiculous awaking to water leaks from a dodgy ceiling in the middle of the night. It makes for a somewhat predictable read, but it's kind of comforting in its own cute way. Some questions resolved, some not.

In the first half of the book, I found the main character unbelievably irritating, but I did finish reaading the book, there was a constant need to keep reading to see what will happen next or whether anything will really happen. Huge big leaps in believability required, some of which simply could not be done. Slow; badly constructed; cardboard characters; tedious. So maybe, just maybe, that's why I really liked this book. Her combined career as journalist, teacher, librarian, educational consultant, and bookshop-seller enables her to comfort and keep young and old writers on track in her lively workshops.
